The Dental Implant Surgical Procedure

Dental implant placement is a safe, highly successful surgical procedure that replaces missing teeth with durable, natural-looking restorations. At South Mississippi Oral Surgery & Implant Center, our experienced Gulfport-based surgeons use advanced imaging and guided surgical techniques to ensure precise, comfortable implant placement.

The process begins with a comprehensive consultation and diagnostic imaging, such as a CBCT scan, to evaluate your bone structure and create a personalized treatment plan. During the procedure, the implant—typically a small titanium post—is surgically inserted into the jawbone where it will act as an artificial tooth root. Depending on the case, one or more implants may be placed in a single visit. Local anesthesia or IV sedation is used to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.

Once the implant is placed, the bone will gradually fuse with the titanium surface in a process called osseointegration, forming a solid foundation for your future restoration.

Healing after Dental Implant Surgery

Healing times after dental implant surgery can vary depending on several factors, including the number of implants placed, your general health, and whether any additional procedures (like bone grafting) were performed. Most patients experience only mild discomfort for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medications.

During the initial healing phase, which typically lasts a few weeks, you may be advised to stick to a soft-food diet and follow specific oral hygiene instructions to protect the implant site. Osseointegration—the process where the implant fuses with the bone—usually takes between 3 to 6 months. After healing, a final crown, bridge, or denture will be attached to the implant, completing your restoration.

Regular follow-ups with your oral surgeon and your general dentist will help monitor healing and ensure the long-term success of your implant.

When are Dental Implants Placed?

Dental implants can be placed immediately after a tooth is extracted or several months later, depending on your oral health, bone density, and treatment goals. Our Gulfport oral surgeons will evaluate your case to determine the best timing for placement.

  • Immediate Implant Placement  In some cases, an implant can be placed on the same day the tooth is removed, reducing treatment time and preserving bone.
  • Delayed Placement  If infection, bone loss, or other complications are present, we may recommend waiting several weeks to months after extraction to allow for healing or perform a bone graft to strengthen the area before placement.

Timing is key to long-term success, and our team will guide you through the best option for your needs.

How Many Implants Do I Need?

The number of implants needed depends on how many teeth you’re replacing and the type of restoration you’re receiving:

  • Single Tooth Replacement  One implant per tooth
  • Implant-Supported Bridge Two or more implants can support multiple teeth
  • Full Arch Replacement (All-on-4 or Overdentures  Typically 4 to 6 implants per arch

We’ll assess your bone health, goals, and budget to recommend the most effective and efficient solution.
